Union Applauds Proposed FY 2010 Staffing Increases
The National Treasury Employees Union (NTEU) praised President Obama’s Fiscal Year (FY) 2010 budget request, which includes funding for 700 additional Food and Drug Administration (FDA) employees, as well as more staff at the IRS. NTEU last week released a preliminary review of the administration’s FY 2010 budget plan, which NTEU President Colleen Kelley said demonstrates a commitment to strengthening federal agencies. Obama is seeking some $2.3 billion in salaries and expenses for FDA, an increase of about $300 million. The FDA budget request would provide for nearly 700 new employees in addition to the staffing increases provided in the FY 2009 omnibus appropriations measure. FDA has been under increasing pressure in large part because of a rash of food-borne illnesses, as well as tainted products entering the country, Kelley said. Also, the administration is requesting $12.1 billion for the IRS in FY 2010, up from the $11.5 billion appropriated for FY 2009. The IRS request seeks an increase in funding for enforcement, which has suffered significant reductions in certain kinds of personnel, including revenue officers and revenue agents, Kelley said. The president also sought a $1.1 billion increase over FY 2009 funding for the Social Security Administration to pay for additional positions there, including at the Office of Disability Review and Adjudication, Kelley said. “I am pleased to see this budget document reflects an understanding both of the important role government plays in the life of every American and the vital part federal employees play in meeting the mission of their agencies,” said Kelley.
