Military Spouse Scholarship Applications Due March 31

March 29, 2005

The National Military Family Association (NMFA) Joanne Holbrook Patton Spouse Scholarship helps pay for professional certification or post-secondary, graduate, vocational or technical school for one academic year. Applications are due March 31.

Scholarships are normally in the amount of $1,000. The funds may be used to assist with tuition, fees, books and school room and board, as long as the funds are paid directly to the educational institution. Applicants must resubmit an application each year that they would like to be considered for a scholarship.

To be eligible, applicants must be:

  • a uniformed services spouse (active, retired, reserve, guard or survivor);
  • currently enrolled or accepted in a qualifying school or accredited certification program; and
  • attending a school approved for Title IX funds under the U.S. Higher Education Act and accredited as determined by the Department of Education.

One letter of recommendation is required for the scholarship. The letter must be received by the NMFA Headquarters postmarked no later than March 31.

To apply, go to www.nmfa.org/site/PageServer?pagename =2005_Spouse_Scholarship_Instructions.

Award letters will be e-mailed (and also sent by letter) to scholarship recipients by May 5, 2005, and winners will be announced online May 15, 2005. E-mails will be sent to applicants who have not been selected by May 15, 2005.

NMFA Headquarters will disburse scholarship funds to schools upon receipt of the scholarship agreement, evidence of enrollment and proof of status as a spouse or surviving spouse.

Those who are awarded scholarships have to submit evidence that they are enrolled in school. Applicants have to send NMFA a letter of acceptance from an accredited university, college or trade school. For applicants seeking certification, they have to send documentation showing acceptance into the certification program.
