Expert: Back pay unlikely if gov't shuts down

In the event of a government shutdown next month, it is possible that federal employees will not receive back pay for time lost, Government Executive reports.
According to former veteran House aide, the political leadership of today is much different and “extreme” in their views than that of the mid 1990s when lawmakers granted retroactive pay to feds after a government shutdown, making it highly unlikely to happen this time around, the article notes.
If Congress does fail to keep the government open Sept. 30 and subsequently opposes back pay for furloughed workers, it would be a first time that lawmakers did not reimburse federal workers due to a lapse in appropriations, the article notes. Congress is expected to vote on an approbations bill this week.
