Judge rules against VA on same-sex benefits

A federal judge ruled Aug. 29 that the Department of Veterans Affairs cannot deny full benefits to a California veteran in a legal same-sex marriage, reports NBC News.
While the Supreme Court in June overturned a portion of the Defense of Marriage Act that stood in the way of providing such benefits, VA has maintained that legislative action is required to make changes to current laws that govern veterans' benefits, which still specify that "spouse" and "surviving spouse" refer only to a person of the opposite sex.
The plaintiff in the California case had sued VA because she received a smaller disability payment as a single vet than she would receive as a married one, according to the report.
