GSA wants to omit travel allowance option for feds

In the midst of increased scrutiny of conference and travel spending in the federal government, the General Services Administration is looking to prohibit use of a lodging allowance for feds, Government Executive reports.

According to the article, GSA has submitted a proposed rule change that would no longer allow feds to be reimbursed after exceeding the maximum lodging per diem rate by up to 25 percent when attending conferences.

The proposal, which was published this week in the Federal Register, is part of the agency’s effort to rein in travel spending, the report notes.

Because these MORONS allowed several of their own to totally abuse the system, they now want to put something in place "reign in" the thousands of us who were doing it right in the first place.

Senior leaders abuse the system and the worker bees have to pay the price.

They need to enforce this rule with the military, who can get reimbursed "actual expenses" IAW JTR. I seen reimbursements given by SMs, even when lower rates were available at the hotel they were staying in, and their original orders did not authorize Actual Expenses. All travelers, to include government contractors, should have reimbursement limited to JTR Per Deim rates regardless.

Most agencies (ahem) do try to spend the least amount possible on lodgings, using Fedrooms.com, whenever possible. Travel is mostly not pleasant anymore as it is. If we have to take one more thing out of hide, the govt. is going to lose a lot of good people.

That may end up costing more money. My agency does not allow rental cars under normal circumstances. If I have to take a taxi back and forth to the conference from a cheaper hotel, the taxi will usually be more than the extra hotel charge. In some cities, the hotel parking plus the rental car would be a lot more than the extra hotel costs. I always weigh the options and go with whatever works out to be overall cheapest for my agency. I can usually find a hotel for the allowable government rate but in some cities it's sometimes not an option.
