Rally set to protest VA employee downgrades

Hundreds of union activists are planning to rally this week in the nation's capital to protest downgrades of certain support services positions at the Veterans Affairs Department.

According to an American Federation of Government Employees' announcement, on June 13 at 11:30 a.m., protestors will rally outside of the White House in opposition of  "unfounded and arbitrary" position downgrades to patient support assistants, medical record clerks, transportation assistants and other support service positions within the VA.

AFGE maintains that the VA has not proven that downgrades to the support services personnel would benefit VA functions or services. The AFGE National VA Council is calling for a moratorium on the reclassifications.

Alma Lee, president of the council, called the actions "a discriminatory assault on veterans and other VA employees at the bottom of the pay scale."
