Timeline provided for TSP cyberattack response

After lawmakers demanded additional information, the Federal Retirement Thrift Investment Board has provided a timeline explaining the delay in reporting the July 2011 Thrift Savings Plan cyberattack to officials, Government Executive reports.

According to the report, the timeline gives new details into what occurred between early April when contractor Serco Inc. informed FRTIB that the personal information of thousands of TSP beneficiaries had been compromised, and late May when participants and lawmakers were notified.

It took nearly two months for the board to determine which TSP participants were affected, the article notes.

According to Greg Long, the board’s executive director, “It was critical that the FRTIB understand the scope of the incident prior to briefing Congress, such that it could provide a full and comprehensive explanation of the incident.”
