Swift action ordered to correct DEERS errors
The Senate Armed Services Committee wants the Defense Department to quickly address accuracy and ineligibility issues identified in the Defense Enrollment Eligibility and Reporting System, the Marine Corps News reports.
An April 2012 report by the Defense Department inspector general identified 200,000 mistakes in DEERS paperwork, and 2,495 cases of benefits being paid to individuals who were not eligible for the program, according to a committee report issued this week. DEERS is a database of uniformed services members, family members and others who are eligible for military benefits.
The article notes that in its fiscal 2013 National Defense Authorization Act (S. 3254), the panel orders the Defense Department to submit plans to correct the errors within 90 days after the bill goes into effect. The bill is not expected to become law until after the November elections.
