Senate panel to consider same-sex benefits bill this week

A Senate bill that aims to extend health care and other benefits to domestic partners of federal employees is set for markup May 16, the Washington Times reports.

The markup of the legislation by the Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee comes in the wake of President Obama’s announcement last week expressing support for gay marriage, notes the Times.

Michael Cole-Schwartz, director of communications for the Human Rights Campaign, said advancment of the bill – sponsored by Committee Chairmen Joe Lieberman (I-Conn.) and Sen. Susan Collins (R-Maine) – “will showcase how important benefits equality is for the federal government to recruit and retain the best talent,” according to the report.

Where is the money coming from this? Hmmm. Well let's start by isolating the taxes that I pay. Just imagine that. I dont want to pay for benefits of heterosexual couples, but I do, and I have been for a long time now. Time i got something from the deal. Time for people like you to butt out and learn what you should have been taught by your parents: Play fair.

Where is the money coming from for this? Honestly, on one hand we talk about cutting back and on the other hand we just keep on spending. This is not about equality, it's about timing.

Actually, recruiting/retaining the best shouldn't be the focus here. This is a matter of basic equality for all Federal employees. This goes back to what should be a basic tenet, that government has no business legislating or penalizing me for whom I marry.
