Fed retirement applications surged in 2011

New figures from the Office of Personnel Management indicate that increasing numbers of federal employees are filing for retirement, reports Federal News Radio.

The number of retirement applications filed in 2011 soared to 104,810—almost a quarter more than in the prior year—and were driven up by retirement incentives offered by agencies during the year, according to the report.

I've worked in the for some large companies before coming to the government. I've worked for the DOD for over 8 years but unlike other jobs I've had you can compare working for the government with a civilian position. What company would subject anyone to a security clearance requirement like to the DOD? Most outside company employees could never pass. Also the environment where you are subject to repeated reviews and evaluations that negatively impact you ability to perform you job. In the end, once you get employed by the federal government it's even harder than a civilian to seek new employment. You have to be very mindful of associations unlike the civilian world. Politicians on the other hand can steal, commit all type of unethical activities yet these are the individual that are telling the government workers to do more with less. I never thought I would have to hide the fact that I work for the federal government. It's just getting harder everyday when you hear congress stabbing us in the back almost for sports sake. I believe it's almost time to quit. Even a pay cut at another position will mean more in future pay than working for Uncle Sam. Don't vote these clowns in to office next term!

40yrs for 40%, VERA-VSIP denied. Pay freeze, step freeze, payroll tax increase, whats the incentive for anyone to be here? a paltry sum that is eaten up by rising costs across the board. FOOD prices rose 43% while cola decreased! Want to make up for it? Show up to work like your $150,000+ SES types, and do nothing. I'm sure there's a "form" to justify it.

Incentive or no this is it! You put in 30 plus years and then what does it all matter to this congress? Maybe if all the experience personnel exodus at the same time they will recognize the importantance of federal employees services to this country. Will you continue to use federal employees pay to balance the budget? How much more?

Geez, this drives me nuts! "Most employees who work over 40 yrs. don't have a life outside of work." I've heard that from young people ever since I was a youngster myself. Those comments don't take into account other peoples situation. One person was still working because they were raising their grandchildren. Others because they were supporting their aged parents. I have 38 years in and don't plan to retire for another 5 years because if I retire now I'll take a 28% pay cut. If I wait another 5 it'll only be a 20% cut.

This is not an incentive to leave the government early as they can't get enough people to buy into Vera/Vsip. It is the craziness with cutting our benefits and freezing our pay that might get people to leave early. Even then if it is taking that long to collect what is owed to you in retirement what good is it to leave early.
