Air Force Academy investigates cadets for possible drug use

The Air Force Academy announced on Jan. 12 that the institution has launched an investigation into unlawful use of drugs by a number of cadets. The academy is investigating “about 15 cadets” for possible violations, according to a statement issued by the academy’s public affairs office.

The academy’s policy banning the use of intoxicating substances—other than alcohol, caffeine, tobacco and legally prescribed medications—applies to cadets, cadet candidates and military members attached to the academy. The policy was established under a general order issued in April 2010.

“Consistent with Air Force policy and instructions, the U.S. Air Force Academy has a zero tolerance policy regarding the use of these intoxicating substances, and certainly illegal drug use or possession,” stated Lt. Gen. Mike Gould, academy superintendent.

The academy launched its investigation following an Air Force Office of Special Investigations inquiry in late 2011.
