Census Bureau workers caught counting sheep

The Census Bureau this week asked employees to stop sleeping in public areas at the bureau’s Suitland, Md., headquarters, according to the Washington Post.

The request came in a memo issued by the bureau’s acting human resources director, Ted A. Johnson, after officials and union reps received complaints about employees nodding off in the facility’s library, lobby and cafeteria. Johnson called the naps “manifestly unprofessional” behavior, according to the report.

Nowhere does it say the naps were during work hours. If that were the case, the memo surely would have been a warning about that instead of stating that it looked inappropriate/unprofessional. If employees are working hard and feel a nap on their lunch break would refresh them, then why should that be wrong? I do see the problem with napping in the LOBBY, though.

Since the majority of the people I work with in my agency are contractors it would be helpful to note the ratio of contractor to fed workers at this location. That way we might get some context here. Don't assume a sleeping person is a fed. You might be surprised by the assumptions a private employee makes when working on a federal contract. Those are cleared up once fired.
