Mileage reimbursement increase a 'no go' at GSA

The General Services Administration said it will monitor monthly fuel costs, but at this time, its evaluation does not support a change in the reimbursement rate for feds who use private vehicles for official duties.

The notice came in response to an announcement by the Internal Revenue Service that it would increase the standard automobile mileage rate from 51 cents to 55.5 cents effective July 1. GSA is keeping its rate at 51 cents per mile for federal employees.

National Treasury Employees Union President Colleen Kelley, who had written to GSA calling for the increase, wrote a second letter to GSA after the announcement expressing disappointment over the decision.

“Federal employees pay the same amount for gas as private-sector employees,” Kelley said in the second letter. “They should be able to be reimbursed for necessary business travel at the same rate as private-sector employees.”

Dear "In my opinion this is just another way of overpaid employees taking more advantage of the system anyway." I do not agree and in point of fact believe it is the Fed taking advantage of the employee. When an employee is making authorized travel as part of official business that employee rates transportation. Employee could request a rental car which cost is fully covered by the Fed. With a rental car the employee would be entitled to Reimbursement of rental expense, fuel expense, parking expense. Employee using POV is entitled to mileage expense and no fuel expense. with the employee using POV the Fed saves dollars and the employee is eating some more expense.
