TSA union winner to be announced this week
The more than 40,000 transportation security officers who serve as airport screeners will learn this week which federal employee union will serve as their exclusive representative in dealings with the Transportation Security Administration.
A first election held in April offered a three-way choice among the American Federation of Government Employees, the National Treasury Employees Union or no union. The election failed to produce a 50 percent-plus-one majority for any of the options, pushing the election into a runoff round between the two unions, which were the top vote-getters. The unions ran close in the initial election: AFGE received 8,369 votes and NTEU received 8,095 votes. Another 3,111 voted for no union.
The election, in the works via phone and Internet since May 23, is slated to end at midnight tonight. The Federal Labor Relations Authority will tally the votes and announce the winner on June 23.
