VA Caregiver program applications
In the initial week of open enrollment, 625 eligible veterans and service members filed applications to designate a family caregiver who will receive a stipend for providing them with in-home health care, the Veterans Affairs Department announced May 18.
Under the Primary Family Caregivers program, family members may receive a stipend, mental health services, access to health care insurance (if they are not already enrolled in a plan), caregiver training and medical support, the VA said.
The VA began processing Primary Family Caregiver applications for eligible post-9/11 veterans and service members May 9. In addition to the 625 applications, program coordinators helped about 1,200 other caregivers find related VA-provided benefits.
“We are off to a good start having helped hundreds to apply, but we know there are thousands more who will qualify and need to apply today,” said VA Secretary Eric Shinseki.
