GSA officials received bonuses during spending investigation

Even as the General Services Administration's inspector general investigated lavish and wasteful conference spending by the agency, several GSA officials involved in the probe received cash bonuses, the Federal Times reports.

According to the report, Washington, D.C., television station WUSA-TV filed a Freedom of Information Act request for the data, and found that five senior GSA employees each received between $9,100 and $11,690 in bonuses during the conference spending investigation.

Rep. Jo Ann Emerson (R-Mo.) told the Times that lawmakers are looking further into the allocation of the bonuses, adding, "We will not tolerate a culture in which bureaucrats put their own interests before the public interest.”

I'm a GS 12, and if I get a bonus, it is only $300 - $500 after taxes

You know, I was a former federal employee. I DO NOT miss it because of this kind of thing. Unfortunately, the general public has a hard time seeing any government employee as productive and/or honest. Honestly, I can understand this. Best times ever at work have been working for the private, for profit sector. Yeah, the rich cats are better to work for then the government. Much better.

So, five senior GSA employees received between $9100 and $11690 in cash bonuses while the GSA was under investigation for waste of government funds on "dubious" trips and meetings. That amounts to a minimum of $50,000 which could pay the salary of one or two government workers for one year depending on their grade. There is an old but very true proverb, "leadership by example." Apparently these employees have set a horrible example.

Why! This is so ridiculous! The bonuses should be taken away immediately and these people involved in this should be fined and fired! Why are so many GS 4-GS 6 employees who work hard and don't receive bonuses like this are the ones that the gov punishes with no raise for 3 to 5 years and then they let these higher ups continue with their crime spree which is what it is. Stop this fraud and waste and let's get back to business caring for our veteran's!
